ESPN Grade: ESPNU150 Player for 2008 Class

Also Considered: Transferred from Texas, enrolled at Arizona in January 2010
Buckner is big, fast and physical. He is tall with a huge wingspan, and was a touchdown maker and a game-changer in high school. ESPN recruiting analysts said of Buckner in 2008, “He very well could have the best ball skills in this class (2008), and when the ball is in the air, the defensive back(s) guarding him are at a distinct disadvantage.” Buckner has fantastic pure leaping ability and times his jumps very well. His rare speed, burst and home-run abilities mixed with his ball skills make Buckner dangerous. He does a great job of tracking the deep ball, will catch it in full stride and is an outstanding leaper that has tremendous body control when he is in the air. Buckner does an excellent job of lulling cornerbacks into thinking he is going full speed before kicking it into sixth-gear and blowing by them on deep routes. At Texas, Buckner showed an ability to make the tough sideline catches and take quick throws for big gains thanks to his excellent open-field running skills. In high school he was a nightmare in the red zone and simply outmuscled press coverage. At Texas, he showed those same skills. Buckner has the skills to be that difference-maker for Arizona at the wide out position, and could also become an option in the return game.
Player Notes: Transferred January 2010. Buckner has already enrolled at Arizona for the spring semester, will redshirt next season under NCAA transfer rules and have two years of eligibility left. Buckner and the Longhorns parted ways soon after he was arrested in College Station, Texas, on charges of criminal trespass and resisting arrest. In 2009 as a Longhorn, Buckner caught 45 passes for 442 yards and four touchdowns. As a true freshman in 2008, he caught five passes for 82 yards and two scores. Buckner originally signed as part of Texas' Class of 2008 as an ESPNU 150 prospect, and was a 5-Star recruit by multiple recruiting websites.
Buckner’s Future Impact
This Year’s Impact: Due to transfer rules Buckner cannot play in 2010, but will be a great player to have on the scout team. Not many teams have a 6’4” receiver with D-I experience giving the defense a look on a weekly basis.
Long Term Impact: Buckner could step right in to replace Dalashaun Dean once Dean graduates after the 2010 season. Like Dean, Buckner is a big, tall, rangy receiver. He put up good numbers at Texas and there is no reason he can’t get in the mix after sitting this year out due to transfer rules.
