BIG THREE -- B+
Live by the THREE die by the THREE. Hill was a rebounding machine, but HILL -- IT'S A FREE THROW!!!! NO ONE IS GUARDING YOU AND YOU ARE NOT SHAQ!!!!! Start shooting 50% and we win!!!! Wise ran the floor well -- shot horribly. Chase, nice all around game -- is developing into the leader -- BUT -- will Wise let him????

Allowing Opponents Shooting -- D-
Man, those guys can shoot when they are open outside!!!! So why leave them open outside??? Because if you guard this QUICK team out there -- they will drive it IN HERE. Finally, UAB cooled down -- and UA caught up. Interesting stat. UAB was shooting .500 from three land. They finished at .433 (which is why we caught up). From the Free throw line??? Not so good. .417!!!!! Maybe Horne had the right idea after all. The dude ALMOST missed the first and DID miss the second!!!!

Shooting -- C-
You can't shoot .250 from 3 land and hope TOO win. Nic needs TOO learn TOO realize HE DOES NOT NEED TOO take the big shot -- especially when he is off. He missed TWO BIG ILL ADVISED shots at the end of the game when a pass would be preferable. Shoot Chase shoot!!!! Same with Horne. If he develops as a fourth scoring option -- then we will be doing better.

Rebounding -- A
Hill set A PRESEASON NIT record with 22. THAT'S amazing for anyone NOT named Wilt!!!! There weren't that many more TOO spread around, but UA outrebounded them by 15!!!!

Defense -- B
We saw UAB exploit our weakness. With our weak inside game -- we have TOO pack it in. If a team is shooting well from 3 point land -- we will probably lose. That's just the way it is. On the plus side, UAB did not get many freebies.

Comeback Cats -- A
This game was there for the taking, which is very improbable. BUT, as one watched the game, Too NEVER got the idea that the Cats were out of it.

Intangibles -- F
Well, that ill-advised foul worked out well for Fogg. Evidentally Horne thought, "Foul!!!! They can't make those foul shots, but they hit 50% from half-court!!!!" We will never know if that half-court shot would have been good, but improabably, UAB sank one of two free throws TOO win. There are positives to take from this game -- but we looked very much like a team that will finish 16-15.

Coaching -- B
Too is impressed with our Cats discipline. It helps TOO have an experienced core -- but outside that core -- there ain't NO experience at all!!!! Fendi has as much experience as a little used freshman in his sophomore year. Same with Horne. The rest are frosh.

Changing Defenses -- A
We are seeing the Cats do something they NEVER did last year. They are not a predictable man-to-man-get-beat-by-your-man "D". They now get beat by the long ball in a zone and throw in that matchup zone that also allows the 3. Not much you can do. When you are as short -- and not defensively quick like our Cats -- you gotta pack it in -- protect Hill and hope-you-miss. We will lose a lot of games when teams DON'T miss.

Assists and ball movement on offense -- B
9 assists for Wise -- 4 for Judkins -- 3 for Chase. That is hopeful and TOO likes TOO see the ball moving around the floor instead of endless and mostly pointless double screens taking Chase out of the action.

Grade for the UAB Game -- 2.77

The Big Three -- B+
Chase took over the first half -- almost single-handedly. In the second half it was Nic's show -- with occasional cameos from Jordan. JH MUST find a way TOO avoid those cheap offensive fouls. He got two cheapies (and obvious) ones in the first half -- and barely escaped an offensive foul in the second half -- that easily could have gone against him.

Shooting -- A-
50% is fine. Free throw shooting still needs to be 10 points higher.

Offensive Flow -- B
It was nice TOO see something different. More wide open and more fun. Coach Pennell has done a good job re-installing the motion offense and tailoring it Too the strengths of our team. Horne had a quiet but effective 10 points.

Rebounding -- C
We were out-rebounded in the stat line, but the boards were really not a problem, overall. Jordan being out for almost all the first half hurt.

Offensive Decision Making -- B
There were some very nice decisions by Chase and Nic. Nic was moving a little slower and more deliberately -- which was a good thing as he was REALLY playing the part of a point guard. Jordan would do better TOO do less jump shooting from mid-range and leave that shot TOO others. Judkins was a very pleasant surprise, as was Fogg.

Defense underneath -- A
FAU did not have much success underneath, or driving TOO the basket -- something that has been an achilles heel the past FEW years.

Overall Defense -- B+
After FAU hit a score in the mid-twenties -- Too doesn't think they made another 3 pointer all night. At the start of the game, it appeared that FAU would make a game of it from 20'-9". IT WAS REFRESHING TOO SEE UA mixing up "D's", especially the unveiling of the 3/4 court pressure. The defensive scheme changes SHOULD be a bit part of this years success.

Coaching -- A
ESPNU was impressed with the job UA coaches have done -- and TOO must concur. UA looked very well prepared -- and Coach Pennell made good on court decisions.

Bench Play -- C
A "C" is what will be necessary for this years success. Hopefully a plethora of Cats will take turns stepping up and filling roles. Fendi was a starter that spent most of the game on the bench.

Intangibles -- B
Too would like TOO see more crowd support -- it was weird TOO see McKale so empty. However, many of the breaks went the Cats way -- as they made their own breaks. A win is a win -- and one more and we can START SPREADING THE NEWS -- WE WILL BE A PART OF IT -- NEW YORK -- NEW YORK (and Too does not mean in Vegas).

Grade for the FAU Game 3.13

120	120	0	North Texas 1-9	119.0

The top 3 are practically deadlocked. The top 7 have remained the same (just in a different order) for weeks. The same could be said of 8 through 14.

Arizona beating WSU by "only" 31 points dropped them 2 spots. Oh well.

120	119	-1	Idaho	1-7	119.3

Wake Forest had the biggest drop - dropping a full 21 spots after losing 26-0 at then 56th ranked Maryland - who jumped up 12 spots after the win.

Pitt moved up 15 spots after their 42-21 win at then 43rd ranked Navy - who dropped 9 spots after the loss.

Of course, the most recent game isn't the only thing that changes team's rankings - a team ranking could improve despite a loss (or vice-versa) - especially if all (or most) of the previous teams they played won in the last week, improving their overall strength of schedule.

Looking at the rankings - there is a fairly big drop off from the 14th ranked team (Utah), and the 15th ranked team (Ball State) - as seen by their average rank (13.6 to 20.3).

Already a week old tradition, here are the updated rankings. Ninety-four computer ranking systems from across the internet were taken into account, and they are Arizona-centric (systems ranking Arizona higher are weighted more - see last week for greater details). Last week's rankings are included (LW), and the amount of change in ranking is also listed (Chng). The average rank of the teams in the weighted rankings is shown (Avg R), so as to better see how the teams are grouped. Once again - sorry about the ugly format:

OK - I'll say right off the bat - I cheated. I don't have the time or the computing power to crunch all the numbers to rank all the college teams - so I took the results of 90 other ranking systems across the internet to assist me in my rankings.

Actually, I took the 90 other systems - ranked them in order of how highly they had Arizona ranked - and weighted them accordingly. I did this because I am an unabashed fan - and I'd like Arizona to be ranked as high as reasonably possible. So, Moore's results (http://members.aol.com/powerrater/col-foot.htm) got multiplied by 90 because he had Arizona rated highest (11th). Sagarin Predictor rankings (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt08.htm) got multiplied by 89 because he had Arizona ranked the next highest (12th). I follow this trend until we get to the obviously insane results of the sports report (http://bellsouthpwp.net/t/h/thesport..._fbc_slots.htm), which has Arizona 82nd and is multiplied by 1.

Anyway - all the results are summed and averaged - here you go (sorry about the ugly format - Pac 10 in bold):
It appears that the ranking systems that take point differential more into account have Arizona ranked higher that the systems that don't take into account point differentials. Of these 90 systems I looked at - I'd bet more than half don't take into account point differentials at all.

Howdy ya'll, Good Ole Bubba here with his post game analeesis of our Wildcats first pigskin beat down of 2008.

First off, Bubba is some dissappointed that Tui threw for less than 200 yards. But I will let him off the hook due to the rain and such. Which reminds me, that other G man feller, Grigsby, has him some scat in them legs. I hope the other G feller gets over the sniffles or whatever and makes it back soon.

Second, Bubba is purty darn disappointed that Mike and Sonny didn't settle for a coupla 3 point kick thingys. I mean, how's a drunk redneck supposed to get the score prediction right if they don't follow my game plan? Jeez, 10 touchdowns is downright OK or FL like.

Lastly, Bubba is real doggone happy to see a balanced game from his Wildcats. Offense, Defense, Special Teams, wooooooo hooooooooo. 'Bout dang time. Well I gotta go drink me some more adult sody pop before the missus gets home. Stay tuned for Bloggin' with Bubba, includin' my super preeeediction fer the Toledo Rockets.

Best local venues

Spent another morning at Tucson High and it got me thinking about the best venues to watch high school football in town.

(In no particular order)

1. Tucson High - my personal favorite. You have the permanent structures on both sidelines. The stands are made of brick and are BIG. Add the field turf and cool archetecture of the school and you have a field that looks like a D-II school, not a High School. This is where Pima should be playing.

2. Catalina Foothills - The school looks more like a nice junior college than a high school. The home stands are permanent and built into the school. To the south you have a great view of the city lights. In years past local television personality Vic Caputo did the PA announcements.

3. Cholla - to the South you have the lights of South Tucson, to the North A Mountain. During the Monsoon months the lightning shows at the Southside school are amazing. Sadly, the Chargers will play all their home games at Tucson High and Pueblo this year due to construction.

4. Sunnyside - The field is nothing special, but the crowd is. They pack the place and the smell of grilling meat is enough to drive you crazy. Better get their early, because parking is a premium.

5. Marana - The actual school is in the middle of nowhere. You can see the lights from the school from several miles away and it almost has that small town feel, like something out of Friday Night Lights.

Salpointe just missed the cut. They have great crowds. Rincon has the biggest bleachers in town. Cienega's field is very new. I have not seen a game at Ironwood Ridge or CDO.

So word out of practice on Wednesday was that Robert Golden was a little overzealous in hitting the offense. Apparently his counterparts on the other side of the ball took great exception to his physicality.

This comes as no surprise. Golden really wants to make an impact and see the field right away. On the first day of camp he was leaving his feet to try and block field goals during a drill and had to be reminded the kick block team was only going half speed while the team was not in pads.

This desire to hit could be a good sign, the last player to do too much hitting in his first few practices was Spencer Larse!

Practice at Tucson High a Joy!

I got to say, I love UA football practices at Tucson High. While Rincon Vista provides more room and a view of the Women’s soccer team, it is just a big intramural field. The view is non-existent. An alternative high school to the East, the soccer field and ROTC obstacle course to the West. A parking lot to the North and some dodgy apartments to the South. One apartment looks right into the field. It was nicknamed ‘Tollner’s Place’ back in 2001 as the Wildcats were set to start the season against Ted Tollner’s San Diego State.

Tucson High is one of the nicest high school fields in town. It is the only one to have two sets of permanent, brick, stands (Catalina Foothills’ home stands are permanent). The field is sunk down from sixth street and the old brick buildings of Tucson’s oldest school give it a great feel.

The field is the new field turf a great surface that provides all the benefits of fake turf, but has greater give and bounce than real grass.

The Cats can’t always practice there, but on the days that they do it is a real treat.

There's been MUCH debate in the forums about the state of Arizona basketball since that heartbreaking championship loss to Duke in 2001. To keep things in a little perspective for the average fan - here are the records (overall and conference) for every Pac 10 team since 2001 (from a post of mine in a thread):

Code:

             W L % CW CL %
Arizona 161 70 0.697 85 41 0.675
Stanford 154 69 0.691 88 38 0.698
UCLA 157 76 0.674 80 46 0.635
Oregon 143 85 0.627 66 60 0.524
Washington 130 90 0.591 64 62 0.508
California 124 93 0.571 64 62 0.508
USC 123 96 0.562 61 65 0.484
WSU 101 107 0.486 45 81 0.357
ASU 102 110 0.481 45 81 0.357
Oregon St. 84 127 0.398 32 94 0.254

Four teams have won the Pac 10 title (all outright) in the last 7 years: UCLA (3 times), Arizona (twice), Stanford, & Oregon.

We all know that Arizona has made the NCAA tourney for 24 seasons straight now, but how many know that only 9 teams have made the NCAA tourney each of the last 7 seasons:

Kansas 21-6 tourney record
Texas 15-7
Duke 13-7
Kentucky 11-7
Wisconsin 10-7
Michigan St. 10-7
Pittsburgh 10-7
Arizona 9-7
Gonzaga 5-7

Now, the last 7 years have hardly been the glory years for Arizona - but things haven't particularly completely fallen apart like some seem to think either.

When looking just at the last 7 seasons - considering the results, all but a small handful of the 341 D1 programs would GLADLY trade places with Arizona.
